Challenges are the mode most players under-use, because the game does not explain the rotation or the cooldown anywhere obvious. They are also the best repeatable DNA source in the game, which makes them the backbone of every evolution grind.
The three challenge tracks
Rotating challenges (every 15 minutes)
The base challenge set rotates on a 15-minute cycle. The game’s own description advertises this, and the October 17 patch notes shipped it live (“added daily and weekly challenges, challenges also rotate every 15 minutes now”).
Daily challenges
Added October 17, 2026. Daily challenges are a separate track with their own completion state, and they pay on top of the rotating set.
Weekly challenges
The same patch added a weekly track with a larger payout. If you only log in once or twice a week, the weekly track is the one to prioritise.
The 30-minute cooldown
What it actually means
On October 16 the developer capped challenges to one win per 30 minutes. That is a per-win lock, not a per-mode lock — you can keep playing, you just cannot bank a second challenge win inside the window.
The developer has flagged it as provisional
That same patch note ends with “will prob change”, so treat the 30-minute figure as current-but-not-permanent. Check the in-game timer rather than trusting a guide from a week ago.
What challenges pay
DNA
15-25 DNA per win, the best repeatable rate outside raids. For comparison, Nightmare story pays 10-20 and normal story pays 2-5.
Everything else
Challenges also pay gems, and they count toward the milestone currencies (Trait Crystals and Stat Tokens) through their reward pool. That combination is why they are the best “do it while watching something” activity.
How to actually clear them
Bring a farm unit
Challenge waves start fast. A team that needs six waves to afford its first carry loses the early challenge tiers outright.
Air coverage from placement
Challenge waves mix air in early. If your only air unit needs upgrade 8, you will lose runs to leakage before the carry comes online — see the air coverage list.
Control beats damage
A slow source (Fujitora, Megumi) buys the farm time it needs. Three DPS and no control is the classic challenge failure.
Challenges versus the other modes
If you need DNA
Challenges on rotation, then raids.
If you need Stat Tokens
Challenges plus Nightmare story first clears — see stat rerolls.
If you need gems
Neither: gems come fastest from Nightmare first clears and codes. See farming gems.
If you need a Secret
Challenges do not drop units. Portals (Frieza) and Endless (Muzan) do — see portals and Endless.
